The Golden Triangle - Country Picnic Racing at its Finest

The Golden Triangle - Country Picnic Racing at its Finest

There’s something special about a country race day. The energy, the outfits, the dusty thrill of the track. But why stop at one when you can make a whole season of it? Out here in north west NSW, the locals know the best way to do bush racing is by chasing the Golden Triangle.

That’s three iconic picnic races held in Moree, Mallawa and Talmoi.

Moree Picnic Races

The circuit kicks off in Moree, a town that knows how to turn on the charm. This fashion-forward 6-race event includes a Calcutta and fashions on the field followed by dinner and a live band into the night. After backing a few winners at the Moree Race Club, unwind at the Moree Artesian Aquatic Centre or BAMM (Bank Art Museum Moree) for culture and a well-earned soak.

Mallawa Picnic Races

Next up is Mallawa. About an hour’s drive from Moree, Mallawa Race Club offers a classic country experience on the June long weekend each year. Traditionally falling on one of the coldest days of the year, Mallawa offers the kind of warm hospitality that keeps visitors coming back year after year. Check in with the Club about camping at the track or catch the bus back to Moree.

Talmoi Picnic Races

Talmoi makes a trifecta with one of the oldest picnic race meetings in the state. The Talmoi Races, held at the small community of Garah, have been going strong for over a century. Delivering all the charm and chaos of true bush racing, it’s a day filled with spirited competition and local colour. After the races, drop into the Club Hotel for a nightcap and a yarn with the locals. It’s where the post-race magic continues.

Mungindi Races

The spirit of country racing gallops on in Mungindi, where the community pulls together to put on a much-loved local meet. Located on the river border of NSW and QLD, the whole community comes together to soak in the atmosphere, heart and country hospitality. Whether you’re there for the horses, the fashions or simply the chance to catch up with mates, Mungindi delivers an authentic bush racing experience.

The Golden Triangle race events would not be possible without the passionate volunteer committees who make them bigger and better every year. Buses are available to and from Moree and some camping may be available on site. Check the Clubs’ Facebook pages for more information about getting to and from the tracks.

Whether you’re a seasoned punter or just in it for the atmosphere, the Golden Triangle is more than just a racing tradition. It’s a celebration of community and country hospitality. Three towns, three race days, and endless memories waiting to be made.

The Golden Triangle bush race circuit happens in May and June each year.
