Culture Walk

Culture Walk

Take a leisurely walk around town and experience some of Moree's best cafe and cultural offerings - coffee, food, books, art and architecture.

BREAKFAST AND BOOKS

Start your day in the heart of Moree with breakfast at Brooker Trading Co, a favourite among locals. With the scent of fresh espresso in the air and the sound of conversation all around, it’s the perfect place to fuel up on wholesome meals, house-made baked goods or a steaming cup of coffee.

A few doors down, pop into Wise Words, Moree’s inviting independent bookshop. Thoughtfully curated shelves offer everything from contemporary fiction and children’s books to eclectic reads on gardening, art, culture and more.

ART GALLERY TRAIL

When you’re ready, take a short stroll around the corner to BAMM – Bank Art Museum Moree. Housed in a striking heritage building, this contemporary gallery hosts a dynamic program of exhibitions and holds an exceptional collection of First Nations’ artworks and objects.

Be sure not to miss the carved trees by Lawrence Leslie, an extraordinary example of traditional Kamilaroi cultural practice. The trees are on permanent display in the gallery and in the BAMM garden.

Next, wander along the street to The Moree Gallery, a hidden gem, established for over 30 years. This contemporary regional gallery and concept store showcases ceramics, jewellery and paintings by regional artists—perfect if you’re looking for a beautiful keepsake or artwork to take home.

From there, head to Yaama Ganu, a not-for-profit Aboriginal art gallery and social enterprise just a short walk away. The gallery features works by artists from the local Kamilaroi Nation and other Aboriginal-managed art centres across Australia. As well as the current exhibition in the gallery, the stockroom holds an impressive collection of works, all available for purchase, and the onsite gallery shop is filled with handmade weavings, fashion, jewellery and homewares.

LUNCH AND COFFEE

Adjoining the gallery, Café Gali offers a relaxed, welcoming space for lunch. Known for fresh salads, delicious sandwiches and good coffee, it’s a great place to recharge and reflect on the artworks you’ve seen throughout the morning.

If your walk happens to fall on a weekday, drop by Social Co House just down the street. This creative hub blends coworking, event and creative spaces and hosts regular art workshops, plus there’s barista-made coffee. It’s a window into Moree’s vibrant, ever-growing community of makers, thinkers and doers.

ARCHITECTURE WALK – A STROLL THROUGH MOREE’S HISTORIC HEART

It’s now the perfect time to stretch your legs and take a gentle walk through the town centre of Moree, rich with heritage buildings. You can download the guide here or pick up a free Architecture Walk brochure from Tourism Moree at the Information Centre. The Guide includes a map and brief histories of each featured building and structure. The self-guided route is flat and easy, and takes no more than an hour at a relaxed pace.

Set out from the Moree War Memorial, then wind your way past a splendid collection of historic sites: the former Reids Emporium (now Harvey Norman), the grand Imperial Hotel and the stately BAMM.

Continue on to Moree TAFE, the Lands Office and the solid, old Westpac Bank building.

The walk also takes you past Pitt Son Crane and Co. Ltd (now Gwydir Chiropractic), the handsome Moree Courthouse and several other buildings of significance.

It’s a gentle but fascinating adventure, ideal for curious travellers, photography lovers, architecture admirers and history buffs alike.
