Saddling Up for Horse Racing

Saddling Up for Horse Racing

There’s something special about race day in the bush. The thundering hooves, the thrill of a photo finish, and the unmistakable country hospitality keep people coming back year after year. In and around Moree, horse racing isn’t just a sport. It’s a proud tradition, a social calendar highlight, and a celebration of rural life at its finest.

The Golden Triangle

If you're chasing the ultimate trifecta of country race days, look no further than the iconic Golden Triangle: Moree, Mallawa and Talmoi. Scheduled over a six-week period from May to June, these three bush picnic race events are legendary in the northwest. The Moree Races offer a fashion-forward day of fun and fundraising.

The event includes:

  • Fashions on the Field
  • Calcutta
  • An evening dinner with a live band to keep the dance floor pumping.

Mark your calendar for the down-to-earth fun of Mallawa Races on the June long weekend. The locals might tell you it's the coldest day of the year, so rug up and let the atmosphere keep you warm. North of Moree at the small community of Garah, the rich history of Talmoi Races is now mixed with a family-friendly focus, including President’s lunch and a jumping castle. Ticking off all three picnic races is a rite of passage, so why choose one when you can make a season of it?

Mungindi Races

Beyond the triangle, the spirit of country racing gallops on in Mungindi, where the community pulls together to put on a much-loved local meet. Located on the river border of NSW and QLD, the whole community comes together to soak in the atmosphere, heart and country hospitality. Whether you’re there for the horses, the fashions or simply the chance to catch up with mates, Mungindi delivers an authentic bush racing experience.

The Moree Cup

In September, the Moree Cup is a family-friendly race meet held annually on Father’s Day. Drawing top local and visiting talent the day, including live entertainment and kids' activities, so there is something for everyone, even if you’ve never placed a bet in your life. The energy is infectious, and the crowd is a mix of seasoned punters, fashionable racegoers, and those just there for a good time.

The Twilight Races

Cap the year off with Moree’s largest racing event, The Twilight Races. Held the week before Christmas, the Twilights are a chance to catch up before focusing on family over the festive season. Fashions generally cater to the hot weather with full-brimmed hats, flowy dresses and blokes in a respectable mix of shirt, tie and shorts. Locals invite their friends to town to celebrate the year that was, dancing the night away with a live band following a day of racing.

Different Races, Same Shared Spirit

What makes racing in this region truly stand out is its sense of community. These events are all volunteer-run and community-backed. They double as reunions, fundraisers, and celebrations of country life. So, mark your calendar, dust off your boots (or heels), and experience horse racing the way it was meant to be. With heart, and a whole lot of horsepower.
