Top 5 Family Friendly Activities in the Moree Plains

Moree Plains has a mix of outdoor adventures, cultural experiences, and family-friendly spaces to fill those seemingly endless school holidays. From a bush walk at Waa Gorge National Park, to a fishing at Gum Flat Reserve, explore Moree’s art trails, make a day trip to Mungindi, or play up in our wonderful playgrounds. There is something for kids of all ages in the Moree Plains!

1. Family Bushwalk

Take a drive along the picturesque Terry Hie Hie Rd to one of our region’s natural highlights, Waa Gorge. Stop along the way at the Terry Hie Hie Aboriginal Cultural Area to learn how the Gamilaroi people lived in the area before colonisation. The area includes educational signage and the chance to see ancient grinding stones alongside contemporary artworks. Afterward, jump back in the car for the drive to Waa Gorge National Park. There are several creek crossings on the route, so pause when you can to take in the scenery and capture some photos along the way. On arrival at the Waa Gorge Recreation area, make sure to read the signage and take a picture of the park map – there is little to no phone reception in the Gorge. We suggest following the path to the rock pools for some beautiful scenery and photo opportunities. Make sure to listen to the birds and keep an eye out for wildlife along the trail. Pack a picnic and soak in the fresh air.

  1. Art for All Ages

Moree is home to a vibrant cultural community with murals and public art dotted throughout the town, and Bank Art Museum Moree (BAMM), offering a range of nationally recognised exhibitions to inspire young minds. BAMM hosts exhibitions from across Australia alongside a collection of local art. You can also visit Yaama Ganu Gallery, which showcases contemporary Aboriginal works and has an on-site café for a relaxed lunch. Around town, keep an eye out for Moree’s colourful murals, which make great photo stops for families.

3. Explore the North of the Plains

If you’re eager to explore further afield, plan a day trip to Mungindi on the Queensland border. The kids will get a kick out of hopping between Queensland and NSW on the Barwon River Bridge, and parents will appreciate a caffeine hit at local café Flock. Duck over the border to walk the Mungindi Sculpture Trail, a creative and interactive outdoor gallery before heading back towards Boomi. The Boomi Pool is the perfect place to soak in the wellness benefits of our famous Artesian waters while the kids play in the 25-meter or kids wading pools. With shady spots for parents to relax and plenty of space for kids to splash and swim on a warm afternoon, before you make the drive back to Moree.

  1. Places to Play

Jacaranda Park is designed with all ages and abilities in mind. The wide paths make it accessible for prams and wheelchairs, while the modern play equipment suits younger children and older kids alike. Enjoy the shaded seating and plenty of open space for ball games. Apex Park is another local favourite, with open lawns, play equipment and a central location that makes it easy to stop by during the day.

  1. Gwydir River Adventure

For the adventurous family, ready your 4WD and take a drive to Gum Flat Nature Reserve. It’s a great spot for the family to explore. Whether you’re into fishing or bird watching, rock skipping, or simply exploring the riverbank, there’s something for everyone. If you’re hungry after your riverside adventure, head 10 kilometres east to Pallamallawa, where the local pub serves up tasty meals with a playground and lawn for the kids to use up that last bit of energy. On the way back to Moree, take the Back Pally Road for a scenic drive through some of the most productive farmland in Australia.
